Demanding unconditional release of Manipur People's Party (MPP) president N Sovakiran who is under police custody, women folks of Ukhongshang Mamang Leikai Komol Lampak staged a sit-in-protest at the locality today.
Sovakiran was arrested by police in connection with a pre-poll clash that took place at Ukhongshang yesterday.
Talking to media persons at the protest site, one of the women protestors, Thangjam Tampha said that women folks and club members of the area had barred hoisting party flag and election activities in and around Ukhongshang area in view of possible violence that may arise thereof.

She contended that Th Radheshyam, an intending candidate of the ensuing Manipur Legislative Assembly election and his workers were appealed not to hold meeting and feast in connection with the election but the call was turned down by them.
According to her, Sovakiran resorted to firing rounds of bullets after supporters of his rival group tried to assault him and his wife.
She alleged that police were unable to take action against Th Radheshyam who came in civilian dress along with his "armed" workers.
Asking as to why Sovakiran was arrested, Tampha declared that Radheshyam and his workers will not be allowed to enter Ukhongshang village if he does not tender an apology before the villagers for his errant act.
If any unwanted incident arises out of political meeting organised by Radheshyam then he should be held solely responsible for it, she made it clear.
Senior vice-president of MPP O Gunindro has also demanded unconditional release of Sovakiran at the earliest.
In a press meet held at MPP's office today, Gunindro said that Sovakiran is a responsible politician and termed the arrest as unacceptable.
