Imphal, December 03 2015:
Villagers of Torbung in Bishnupur district have urged the Government to immediately remove the existing police picket from the village.
Speaking to reporters on behalf of the villagers at a press conference, Torbung Gram Panchayat Pradhan Sapam Rajen accused the personnel of the police picket of frequently harassing the villagers of Torbung and Phoubakchao.
Narrating a latest instance, Rajen said, on December 1 last at around 7.30 pm, around five masked police personnel tried to take away a 22-year-old youth identified as Ashangbam Aditya of Phoubakchao Ekhai Mayai Leikai from his house.
However, as the youth was innocent, locals blocked the way of the police team and managed to rescue Aditya, Rajen said.
After the villagers foiled their attempt to arrest the youth, the police team raised a false alarm which could create communal tension, Rajen said.
However, the misunderstanding was resolved after the arrival of Churachandpur Additional SP and Moirang police station OC, the Pradhan said.
He said that as the Government is planning to set up a full-fledged police station at Phoubakchao Ekhai, there is no need for keeping a police picket near the proposed police station.
Rajen urged the Government to remove the existing police picket from Torbung and inaugurate the police station at Phoubakchao Ekhai at the earliest.
He said that the villagers had submitted a memorandum in this regard to Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who also holds Home portfolio, through Kumbi AC MLA yesterday.
Rajen said that Torbung falls under the jurisdiction of Bishnupur police station.
After the recent mass public agitation in Churachandpur, the Government opened the police picket in the village and deployed police and VDF personnel there, Rajen said.
