Imphal, April 01 2016 :
The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Students' Union has submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor of the university setting April 5 as the deadline for implementing the demands listed in the memorandum.
The memorandum, a copy of which is available with The Sangai Express, demanded the appointment of a full time Director for the university adding that this post has been lying vacant for three years.
Pointing out that the shifting of the main campus to Makhan has been delayed for long, the memorandum pointed out that if the delay continues then the standing infrastructure are likely to require complete renovation by the time they are utilized or occupied.
The student body also pointed out that though building of the main campus has been completed and amenities like road and water and power supply have been installed there are still no serious steps to shift to the main campus.
Also of paramount importance is the construction of hostels and staff residence, said the memorandum and added that despite this the university has not taken up any step to include these facilities in the original blueprint of the campus.
Another pertinent issue that needs serious consideration and prompt action is regarding the status of Department of Tribal Studies and Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, said the memorandum and added that these two departments were opened towards the end of 2013 and have been fully functioning ever since.
Elaborating, the memorandum said that there are three (3) guest faculties in each of the department but no permanent faculties.
It is the desire of the students to sincerely request the University to appoint permanent faculties for these two departments without any further delay.
This should be put on a priority basis as no self-respecting university will run a department, much less two, for so many years without any permanent faculties, added the memorandum.
The availability of seats for PhD is still below the UGC guidelines under Faculty and Research Guidance, where one Assistant Professor can have four (4) Research Scholars.
Given this, a seat increment was also urged, added the student body.
While even newly established private universities with less funds and supports as compared to IGNTU have basic amenities/ facilities such as Wifi, photocopying machines, library books, etc, the university is lagging behind in this, especially at the Regional Campus, said the student body and questioned whether the University is really sincere about developing its one and only campus.
The matter of opening a Certificate Cell at the RCM, lowering the amount of registration and admission fees and construction of a multi-purpose hall at the campus are also pertinent issues, it added.
If the issues are not addressed properly as they should be on or before April 5, the students' union will have no option but to resort to other means, warned the memorandum.
