Student activists, teachers held in principal assault case

Imphal, September 22 2021: Singjamei police arrested five office bearers of DESAM along with NB College principal Dr Ng Ekashini and vice principal I Kunjabati in-charge in connection with alleged assault of NB college principal Ningombam Shitaljit Singh on Tuesday.

According to a police report, Singjamei Police received information that Naorem Birahari (NB) College principal Shitaljit was assaulted by DESAM members at its office located at Kwakeithel.

Shitaljit suffered injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Immediately a team of Singjamei PS, led by the SDPO and OC rushed at the location and picked up DESAM's Thoithoiba Nongthombam (26) s/o N Noren of Khurai Kongpal Sajor Leikai, Kangabam Amardeep (20) s/o K Imo of Kangabam Leikai, DESAM deputy finance secretary Meisnam Anan-dataraj (19) s/o M Angou of Kangabam Leikai, Oi-nam Sital Singh (31) s/o O Meghachandra of Tokpa Ching Awang Leikai and DESAM assistant general secretary Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei (29) s/o M Brojen Singh of Pangaltabi Awang Leikai.

On preliminary enquiry, N Shitaljit informed that on Tuesday at 11 am, he was criminally intimidated and assaulted by one Th Birjit Singh, DESAM finance secretary with attempt on his life and wrongfully confined him in the presence of Dr Ng Ekashini Devi, I Kunja-rani Devi and other office bearers of DESAM at its head office.

A case under FIR number 120(09)2021 SJM PS u/s 307/342/325/120-B IPC has been registered in connection with the incident and the five office bearers of DESAM as well as Dr Ng Ekashini and I Kunjabati arrested.

Meanwhile, the court of CJM, Imphal West on Wednesday upheld appeal of Singjamei police station to extend remand of the five arrested student activists and two teachers to six days' police remand.
