Awareness prog on forest fire held at Wanglee

Kamjong Forest Division organised an awareness programme on prevention of forest fire in Wanglee village on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Kamjong DFO SW Suisa highlighted the harmful effects of forest fire.
He said that forest fire is responsible for the destruction of valuable timbers, and natural resources and eco system.
Forest fire also caused degradation of water catchment areas, loss of wildlife habitat and depletion of wildlife, he stated, adding that loss of natural vegetation and reduction of forest cover is largely attributed to forest fire.
Citing the contribution of forest fire in global warming phenomenon, Suisa said that forest fire releases carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, non-methane hydrocarbon, nitric oxide methyl chloride and various other hazardous gases.
Aze Longphang chairman Shomi Angkang also spoke about different ways of controlling forest fire.
The day-long programme was attended by departmental staffers and local villagers.
