Imphal, July 16 2022:
A team of dental doctors led by Dr Koijam Sashikumar Singh of Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Dental College, RIMS, successfully removed two stones each measuring 4 mm and 3mm in length from left Submandibular duct.
The team of doctors included Dr Deepak Ningombam Singh and Dr Albert Ashem.
According to Dr Sashikumar, just like in kidneys, stones maybe formed within the salivary glands and ducts.
If stones are formed within the gland, there may be pain and swelling of the involved gland located in the upper neck and ear region.
The presence of infection within the gland and duct, reduced salivary flow, reduced water intake, accumulation of inorganic salts like calcium, hydroxyapatite and whitlockite, and octacalcium phosphate may lead to stone formation, the doctor further explained.
