CPI unit demands drought declaration

Asserting that the farmers are facing drought situation and are staring at imminent crop failure in different parts of the state, CPI Khurai Local Council organised a sit-in protest demanding the government to officially declare drought in the state and provide Rs 30,000 compensation per Sangam to the affected farmers.
Speaking at the site of protest held in front of Young Pioneers' English School along Imphal-Ukhrul road, CPI Manipur State Council executive member RK Amusana informed that nearly 90 per cent of the agricultural lands in the state are facing drought situation, thus resulting in crop failure.
The farmers are not only losing their investment but also staring at a possible famine, he said while demanding the government to convene a special session of the state assembly and declare drought as well as provide compensation to the affected farmers.
He also appealed to the people of the state, especially the farmers to support and join the movement.
The protestors also offered floral tribute to the portrait of Hijam Irawat as part of the ongoing month-long Irawat birth anniversary observance.
