Escaped opium harvesters arrested

Machi police on Monday arrested David Luhankholam and Tinkholam Baite, who allegedly threatened security forces with sharp-edged weapons and then fled after they were caught harvesting opium from a poppy plantation in T Boljang village under Machi PS on February 9.According to a police report, a combined team of Machi PS, NAB and Forest Depart ment was conducting poppy destruction drive in the hill ranges of T Boljang village on February 9, when they came across a group of individuals trying to harvest opium.
When the police tried to arrest them, David swung a knife at the security personnel and escaped into the dense forest.
However, both were summoned to Machi PS through T Bonjang village chief Otkhokhai Haokip around 10 am on Monday, following which both came to the station around 3pm and admitted to the charges levelled against them.
As such, they were formally arrested by the PS and further legal proceedings have been initiated.
