Police detain 407 SOP violators, collect Rs 1.63 lakh fine

Imphal, April 29 2021:
A sum of Rs 1,63,500/- was collected as fine from 407 Covid SOP violators who were detained across the State today.
The Police Department continued the crack down on violators of guidelines and restrictions issued by the State Government and the State Disaster Management Authority in connection with COVID-19 pandemic, including failure to wear mask in public places, failure to maintain social distancing in public places, spitting in public places, etc to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the State.
The Police Department warned that those who violate the SOP shall be dealt with strong legal action under National Disaster Management Act, 2005 and other appropriate laws.
On the other hand, 19 persons were produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West today for violating the guidelines and restriction by Manipur Disaster Management Authority and State Government in connection with COVID-19 Pandemic after a non-FIR case was registered against them at the City police station under section 32 of Police Act 1861 After perusing the case record, the Court explained the particulars of offence to accused persons and asked whether they plead guilty or not.
As the arrested persons accepted the charges levelled against them for not wearing masks in public places, the Court directed them to either pay a fine of Rs 1000 each or undergo simple imprisonment for 3 days.
All the convicts were later released on furnishing the fine of 19 thousand in total and the same has been deposited to the State's account.
