Imphal, July 15 2011:
A special mechanism to identify the actual amount of urea needed in paddy fields known as Leaf Culture Chart has been introduced in the state for the first time by Agriculture Minister Ph Parijat.
Use of this Leaf Culture Chart enables farmers to identify the amount of urea needed thereby limiting the excessive use of urea by farmers.
This will further reduce the amount of money spent on urea.
After a thorough training given to the farmers of Andro by Soil scientist of CAU Dr Athokpam Herojit on the use of Leave Culture Chart, Minister Ph Parijat introduced the chart to the farmers of the state.
Speaking on the introduction function at Andro, Minister Ph Parijat said that the Agriculture Department is working for the welfare of the people in general and the farmers in particular.
The department could be better termed as Farmer's Welfare Department.
Ph Rajendro, Deputy Director, Agriculture Department said that fertilizers should be used only after testing the soil.
But farmers in Manipur seldom follow this pattern and use different kinds of fertilizers at their wish.
So to prevent farmers from using fertilizers unnecessarily the Agriculture Department has introduced the Leaf Culture Chart.
He further went on to say that giving the exact amount of needed fertilizer is a part of the Integrated Paste Management and Integrated Nutrient Management programme.
The department has introduced the Leave Culture Chart in the state to prevent unwanted use of fertilizers and reduce pest infestation.
Entomologist of CAU, Imphal Dr Kh Ibohal, Agricultural Officer Of State Agri Department L Sanatomba and social activist Dr Y Mani spoke on different topics relevant to the farmers.
Sprayer pumps, seed treatment drums and Cono weeders were distributed to farmers by Minister Parijat.
