An unknown disease has killed a number of cows in Ukhrul and Kakching districts.
While at least six cows died after being inflicted by the unknown disease at Tora in Ukhrul district last week, one cow was found dead at Wangoo Sangdangkhong under mysterious circumstances in Kakching district this morning.
In Ukhrul, the cows were found dead at the grazing field of Tora village.
Confirming the death of the cattle, sources said that the animals were kept at the open grazing field near the wet paddy land of Khamchoe area on the outskirts of the village.
The exact cause of the death of the cattle couldn't be established as the carcasses were found in a decomposed state, sources added.
It is reported that the whereabouts of some infected cows is still not known.
One of the villagers said that eight cows were also killed by a mysterious disease last year.
He further stated that cattle are prone to sickness mostly in the dry season.
The cows belonged to Katuiyo and Rashing.
According to the sources, farmers of Tora used fertilizer and pesticide to increase their crop yields.
The cattle owners appealed to the Veterinary Department to conduct an investigation and verify the exact causes which killed the cattle so as to take precautionary measures in the coming years.
Following the incident, the cattle owners have also lodged a complaint with Somdal police to conduct an independent investigation.
Meanwhile at Kakching, the death of the cow has raised alarm among the farmers for a brief period following which experts from Veterinary Department rushed to the area and carried out an investigation.
It is reported that the officials of the Veterinary Department have collected the samples of the carcass for investigation, following which the carcass has been disposed of.
It is further reported that a vaccination programme for cattle will be organised at Wangoo shortly.
