Imphal, February 11 2014:
Alleging that the Government of India has been treating in the most casual manner the issue of racial discrimination, physical assault, mental harassment, rape, molestation and murder of people from the North East region in many cities of India particularly Delhi, the Joint Students' Coordinating Co-mmittee has imposed a curfew upon all non-Manipuris from 5 am till tomorrow midnight.
This was announced during a press meet held at KSA office this afternoon by JSCC convenor Th Prem-chand.
Earlier, a large number of people comprising of civil society members, human rights activists, students activists and Meira Paibis who were staging twin protest demonstrations at Uripok and GP Women's College marched to the Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum to the Governor.
But they were stopped by the police at Old Lambulane crossing.
But eventually six persons namely AMSU advisor Th Suresh, social worker Hareshwar Goswami, human rights activist Babloo Loitongbam, former MSAD president Biju, UMO president Sorojini and Th Naresh were allowed to proceed to Raj Bhavan.
There a memorandum was submitted to RK Nimai, Secretary to the Governor as the Governor was out of station.
Notably, JSCC is a common forum for AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIMS.
Saying that the Government of India has not taken up a single concrete step in spite of the repeated cases of rape, murder, molestation and harassment of people from the North East region at the national capital, Premchand cautioned that the situation would only get worse in case the Government fails to act this time too.
During the curfew hours tomorrow, all non-Manipuris should cease all their activities.
He also appealed to all non-Manipuris not to defy the curfew.
In case the Government of India fails to act even after the peculiar curfew, next course of action may result in untoward incidents, he warned.
