IIP Day celebrated all over

Like in other parts of the world, the International Indigenous People's Day has been celebrated in the State today with Indigenous People's Forum organising a commemorative function at the Keishamthong Kabui Youth Union hall.
Speaking at the occasion, Forum secretary Golmei Poushing highlighted that the United Nations Organisation (UNO) declared observance of World Indigenous People's Day in 1994 to enable the indigenous communities highlight their plight.
Strongly advocating preservation of customs and traditions of the indigenous people, he conveyed that conducting awareness programmes on a regular basis would be helpful in promoting the cause of all marginalised section of the society.
Speaking at the occasion, former member of Manipur Human Rights Commission Ng Nongyai stated that in pursuing the rights the indigenous people should not forget their duty to the society.
He also suggested that collective movement rather than isolated campaigns would yield positive results in ensuring rights of the indigenous people.
Expressing similar views as Nongyai, Forum president Makulim Remei stressed on unity and cohesion among the indigenous communities to achieve their goal and aspirations.
Remei iterated that protecting one's customs and traditions is vital in enriching the culture of the indigenous people.
The observance was held with Imphal Municipal Council Chairman N Raghumani Singh as the chief guest.
The International Day of World's Indigenous Peoples, 2012 was also observed today at Yeasom Lower Primary School, Kasom Khullen, Ukhrul district with the theme 'Indigenous Media, empowering Indigenous Voices.
The observance programme was organised by the JAC on Inner Line Permit System in collaboration with Yeasom (Khoribok) Village Authority.
The programme was attended by Convenor of JAC on Inner Line Permit System, Sapamcha Jadumani; Co-convenor of the JAC, M Churamani, Joy Chingakham of FREINDS; Advocate Somorendro Thokchom; Advocate Arjun Singh; Advocate Manihar Singh and Headman of Yeasom Village, Ayo as the presidium members.
Speakers of the programme said that the indigenous population of Manipur would extinct in 20 years if not the rampant migration of outsiders are checked.
They also appealed the Manipur Government to implementInner Line Permit System in the State.
