CM throws down poll gauntlet before UGs

While reiterating that devolution of power to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) would be effected very soon, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has asked underground outfits to test their credibility and test people's acceptance by contesting elections.
Speaking as the chief guest at a district level special training programme on the flagship schemes of the UPA and SPF Government at New Canaan village in Ukhrul district today, Ibobi, who holds the Home portfolio, reminded armed groups that exploding bombs and intimidating the people will lead to nowhere.
Proposing that the UGs assess their credibility through the democratic process in order to substantiate claim of working for the people, he also asserted that the public is fed-up of prolonged violence wreaking havoc in the State.
Observing that the people's limit of tolerance against continuous violence has been overstretched, Ibobi also expressed that everybody will welcome peaceful gesture from the armed groups.
Asserting that the UPA Government at the Centre and SPF coalition here in the State is committed to initiating and implementing various development programmes, the Chief Minister also conceded that mandate of the electors in the next hustings will prove the achievements of the Government.
With regard to devolution of power to the ADCs, he said amendment of certain provisions to expedite the power devolution process cannot be ruled out.
The CM also reiterated the SPF Government's commitment to ensure every section of the society enjoy the fruit of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and to constitute School Development Management Committee to closely monitor and assess education related works at the local level.
Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing, who also spoke at the occasion said the Congress party organisation has endured and overcome various forms of challenges and as such pressure tactics or threats cannot dampen its spirit to serve the people.
While calling upon the 'youths' to give up violence and stating that it will be futile to demand separation from India, the former Chief Minister also condemned the recent bomb blast at the ADC office complex at Khuman Lampak as an act of cowardice.
Describing injuries caused to some innocent persons as most despicable, called upon all to act in a sane manner.
Meanwhile, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (I) president Gaikhangam affirmed that success of Congress candidates in the recently held Imphal Municipal Council elections not only underscore confidence of the people upon the political party but is a clear indication that the Congress will retain power in the next assembly election.
Rivalry between Congress nominees and independent candidates who actually applied for Congress tickets but could not be obliged has been cited as one of the factors for candidates of other political organisations managing to win in some of the IMC wards.
SPF Ministers N Biren and DD Thaiisi and party MLAs Mangibabu and Manga Vaiphei also attended the programme.
