Imphal, June 28 2022:
Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday inspected the Pony Breeding Ground measuring 30 acre at Lamphelpat which was allocated to Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA) and the pony breeding site at Pangei.
Briefing the media at Lamphelpat, N Biren stated that ponies which are associated with Manipur since time immemorial took an important role in driving out the Awa from the State during the period of Seven Years Devastation.
Many ponies have died in the past due to road accidents and other factors which could have been prevented due to lack of a breeding ground, he added.
Saying that he was surprised to learn from experts that Manipur pony is the only horse breed which can feed at swampy land, the Chief Minister continued that the State Government is considering to dig 427 acre of land at a certain place to conserve water bodies while the mud extracted would be used to level the breeding ground at Lamphelpat.
He also stated that the breeding ground would be upgraded shortly.
Further informing that at least one polo ground each would be developed at five valley districts, the Chief Minister maintained that a pologround would be set up at Wangjing Tentha Awang Leikai in Thoubal first.
Maintaining that the State Government has been taking up all possible measures to safeguard the pony, he urged all the breeders to take their ponies to the breeding ground at Lamphelpat if they don't have such a facility at their places.
Later, the Chief Minister also inspected the construction of a pologround at Ebudhou Marjing Eco-Tourism Park.
N Biren Singh was accompanied by TA & Hills Minister Letpao Haokip, Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo and Keirao AC MLA Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei.
