The 3rd Khundongbam Brojendro Theatre Festival 2014 came to a close today at Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound.
The valedictory function of the festival that began from Jan 18 was graced by Governor VK Duggal and renowned theatre personality and Chairman of National School of Drama, New Delhi Ratan Thiyam as the chief guest and president respectively.
Display of Dhol and Dholok Cholom and staging of an English play The Retreating World by Bangalore based Little Jasmine Theatre Group marked the closing ceremony.
The ten-day long theatre festival was jointly organised by Khundongbam Brojendro Cultural Trust and Dept of Art and Culture, Govt of Manipur with the theme Theatre for Peace and Friendship.
Different plays were staged on daily basis during the festival.
Speaking at the occasion, Governor VK Duggal underlined that the entire country and even many parts of the world are aware that Manipur has rich cultural heritage and it is a matter of pride for the people that Manipur is the home of Ratan Thiyam and Kanhailal, the two colossus of present day theatre in the country.
He assured possible assistance for the promotion of theatre in the State.
The Governor also eulogised the works of writer Khundongbam Brojendro.
Ratan Thiyam while addressing the gatherings said that it is now time to give a place of high esteem to the doyen of theatre personalities in the society while adding that the era of negligence to theatre has gone past.
He expressed his wish that towering theatre personalities and luminaries and their works are given due recognition like in other parts of the country.
