IED-fitted coconuts seized, one held

A team of Imphal East commandos arrested one 20 year old man with two 'powerful' Impro-vised Explosive Devices (IEDs) fitted inside coconuts on Thursday.
Briefing media persons at the SP, Imphal East conference hall, Imphal East SP N Herojit stated that the district police have been beefing up security measures in the district in view of the frequent bomb plantations during the past few days.
Saying that a combined team of Imphal East commando and column of 15 Assam Rifles carried out mobile frisking and checking drive from Mantripukhri to Koirengei area along National Highway 39 yesterday, the SP added that one unknown person moving in a very suspicious manner was detained for verification during the drive near Koirengei bridge at around 3.35 pm.
The person has been identified as Nongthombam Abung Meitei alias Nong-damba, s/o N Nandakumar Meetei of Nongpok San-jenbam Khullen, Lamlai.
He is an active member of PREPAK (Pro), the SP said.
On interrogation, it was learnt that Abung came to Mantripukhri to identify a location for planting a bomb, N Herojit continued and added that two IEDs fitted inside coconuts were also seized by the combined team from the foothill of Thumbi Ching, Nongpok Sanjenbam on the disclosure of the arrested cadre.
Saying that the IEDs were handed over to Abung by one Ango of PREPAK (Pro) to carry out an attack on the security personnel, the SP appealed to all to inform the control room of Imphal East police (phone no: 2452669) if they come across any suspicious activities.
The seized items include two RDXs (cake) each weighing around 150 grams, two RC receivers (circuit board), two electric detonators, two batteries (9 volt) and one remote control device.
Abung has been handed over to Heingang police station along with the seized items.
Reportedly, the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East has remanded Abung into police custody till December 2 .
