Ukhrul, April 26 2020:
The very rare flower Khamasom van (snake look alike flower) that only flourishes on the dense mountainous slope of Khamasom village has started to bloom for the first time in Ukhrul town.
Khamasom village is located about 35 kms north of Ukhrul town.
Khamasom van grows in the deep forest of Mathasham and is protected by the shade of giant trees preserving its natural beauty in an isolated location.
Back in 2017, this correspondent had trekked through the dense terrain along with a team of 'Khamatek trekker' to explore the high-altitude mountainous region.

The team collected some plants for transplant at Ukhrul town which gradually adapted to the new climatic conditions of the town and after three years of persistent and patient nursing and caring, and have begun to bloom.
Many floriculturists/persons from Ukhrul town have turned up to see the rare flower blooming and were visibly taken in with the peculiar looks of the flower which set it apart from the others.
They have even offered to purchase the flower randomly.
The rare Khamasom van 'snake look alike flower' grows in a tree shade in a small area at Mathasham forest of Khamasom village.
Among the few plants brought from the forest in 2017, one of the plants started budding from the second week of April onward and has finally bloomed now in a different habitat at Tangrei, Ukhrul town.
Khamasom van plants are 1 to 3 feet tall bearing dark purple flowers and grow from tuber.
The flower has a unique appearance with an elongated filament similar to the tongue of a venomous snake while the fully bloomed flower resembles an open-mouthed snake and the petals have lines of patches.
Khamasom van has a slender stem, bears three broad leaves which give shades to the flowers.
Uncontrolled felling trees or forest exploitation in the region would endanger and threaten the habitat and existence of the flower in the region.
To reach the home of Khamasom van, one has to walk at least 6-7 hours on foot from Khamasom village and follow the path taken by hunters.
Village guides are needed to go to the place where the flower blooms from the last week of April to mid-week of May.
Khamasom village is situated to the north of Ukhrul town and is about 35 kilometers away.
It is partially connected by the National Highway and is flanked by Sihai in the south, Huishu in the north west, Nungbi Khullen in the west and Myanmar in the east.
