Tangjengpat of Thoubal district, the dwelling place of migratory bird, Ruddy Shelduck, locally known as Nganu-Thangong will be declared as biodiversity site of the state, chief secretary DS Poonia, who is also the chairman of the Manipur Biodiversity Board, has said.
Speaking at the observance function of the "International Day for Biological Diversity" held at Manipur Zoological Garden, DS Poonia informed the gathering that the government has earmarked Rs 10 lakh for development of Tangjeng lake as biodiversity site in this current financial year.

Not only this, the state government has also earmarked Rs 10 lakh for development of Koubru hills where different kinds of species are available.
The work programmes were taken up for protecting the biodiversity in the state as India is among the signatories of the United Nation's Biodiversity Declaration, and considering the need for protecting the biodiversity of the region, the chief secretary added.
Director of UGC Staff College of Manipur University, RK Ranjan who graced the observance function said that as Manipur is not only included in the Indo-Burma Hot Spot and many different species are found living owing to the landscape of the region.
Many species are also available in the state.
The rich culture of the state is also directly related with the availability of different species.
He also expressed the need for efforting to save the state bird of Manipur Nongin which is among the greatly endangered birds.
There is the need for keeping a living Nongin bird in the state zoological garden.
Principal chief conservator of forest in-charge A Kharsi-ing, IFS also stressed the need for conservation of the natural habitant areas of the wildlife.
The observance function was also attended by many environmentalists and officials of the state.
