Imphal, April 21 2015 :
MLA Th Shyamkumar has expressed doubt about the outbreak of Bird Flu (H5N1) in Manipur and slammed the state Veterinary Department for mass culling of poultry birds.
The Andro MLA said this in a press meet held at his official quarter in Imphal on Tuesday.
He said that the confirmation on the detection of bird flu case is made based only on the sample sent by the Poultry Section of ICAR Lamphelpat.
The State Veterinary Department should not make a hasty and final conclusion based on the report from Bhopal confirming detection of avian influenza, Shyamkumar said.
However, he was of the opinion that the infection of Bird Flu at the poultry unit of ICAR Lamphel was due to a large number of migrant birds landing frequently on the vast open areas of Lamphelpat.
He strongly reacted to the order of the Veterinary Department for culling a large number of poultry birds in the State following the outbreak of avian influenza, saying such steps would be bad for people who are in poultry business.
Shyamkumar alleged that ICAR Lamphelpat is one of the most corrupted institutions in Manipur, adding its activities and function are not transparent.
MLA Shyamkumar and the media team later visited Andro where he introduced a new variety of flower "Lam Kaboklei" grown in the Panam Ningthou Garden of Andro.
He said this flower variety is not found in any other place of Manipur.
Shyamkumar appealed to the people of Manipur to visit the garden to see this rare flower and added that he had proposed to the North Eastern Council to sanction funds to develop this garden.
Later in the day, MLA Shyamkumar also took part in a solar lamp distribution function at Andro Khoibu.
The solar lamps were distributed to the villagers under the 'Light a Home' Project by the Art of Living, Manipur.
