KLNP set for expansion

Imphal, January 18 2016:
With Chief Minister O Ibobi in the chair, the State Board for Wildlife held a meeting and it was decided to enlarge the territory of Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) .
The meeting which was attended by Forest Minister Th Debendra and officials of the Board agreed to expand the park from its present area of 40 sq Kms by acquiring some adjoining areas, informed an official source.
The meeting also resolved to declare the adjoining Khongjaingamba Hill Reserved Forest and some portions of Dampi Reserved Forest as wildlife sanctuaries.
The board meeting gave approval to the proposed construction of power line from Pallel to Moreh through Yangoupokpi wildlife sanctuary and another one from Khenjang to Thanlon.
The meeting further discussed about protection of Amur Falcons which immigrate to Tamenglong every winter season from Siberia and China.
Another agenda of the meeting was preservation of Dzuko Valley.
The board has also agreed to station two honorary wildlife wardens in each district, informed the official.
Meanwhile it is reported that Forest Department Wildlife Wing would be counting birds in and around Loktak Lake from 50 vantage points on January 21 together with local clubs and NGOs.
