Imphal, February 14 2015 :
Janata Dal (United) State unit submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh reminding the commitment given to the people of Manipur by BJP and JD (U) regarding repeal of AFSPA.
Addressing a press conference, Janata Dal (U) State unit president M Tombi said that a team of JD (U) executives led by himself met the Home Minister and submitted the memorandum at Raj Bhavan at 8.30 am today.
When the party was an ally with BJP at the Centre, the two parties gave a commitment to the people of Manipur to repeal the draconian Act, he added.
The memorandum also mentioned the harassments and killings meted out to innocent civilians by security forces under the cover of AFSPA.
Saying that BJP was an ally of JD (U) for around 17 years at the Centre, M Tombi said that the major ruling party must not forget the promises made to the people in the past.
The memorandum demanded the Centre to replace Assam Rifles with BSF at international and State borders and establish a special highway protection force to check harassment and extortion, Tombi said.
His party would never compromise with the territorial integrity of the State, Tombi said and added that JD (U) also demanded the Home Minister to bust the unrecognized camps of NSCN-IM in the State.
The party also urged to bring an early political solution/dialogue with armed groups which are currently under SoO and MoU with the Government.
He said that the memorandum also expressed serious concern over detention of Minister Francis Ngajokpa and MLA D Korungthang by AR troops at Khudengthabi.
He said that JD (U) is against putting up of flags of National political parties, scarfs and symbols at Tulihal airport whenever any leader of these parties visit the State.
Instead of putting up party flags at the airport complex, these parties can always welcome the leaders at their respective party offices, he added.
The press conference was also attended by party general secretary Lien Gangte, secretary administration Sekh Muffijuddin, minority chairmen Ajijur and other party members.
