This was followed by offering of floral tributes to the war heroes and patriots.
Thangal Union Secretary Dikaka K, Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 Chairman H Ibotombi Khuman, Mayangkhang Chairman YK Regent, Ningthoupham Chairman BK John and Mayangkhang Women Welfare Development Organisation Chair- person YK Irish attended the function as presidium members.
Speaking at the gathering, H Ibotombi said that five sons of the soil were hung to death for fighting against British colonial forces in the aftermath of the Anglo-Manipuri War 1891.Out of the five, Yuvraj Tikendrajit (Koireng) and Thangal General are well known.
Their death anniversary is being celebrated at the State level, and their statues and proper memorial sites have been well developed, Ibotombi said.
But the other three martyrs namely Chirai Thangal, Pukhrambam Kajao and Niranjan Subedar remain largely unsung till date.
They too deserve full honour and it was with this idea that the Justice Committee started observing the death anniversary of Chira Thangal since two years back, he said.
He vowed that a statue of Chirai Thangal would be installed at Mayangkhang Eco-Park next year.
The statue would help younger generations understand the heroes and martyrs of Manipur apart from instilling a sense of patriotism and valour.
Chirai Thangal was hung to death by British colonial rulers inside a prison located near Kangla's Nungjeng Pukhri on October 13, 1891.He was born and brought up at Mayangkhang.
On March 24, 1891, Chirai Thangal killed British Government's Telegraph Superintendent WB Melville and Signaller James O' Brien at Mayangkhang Dak Bungalow.
Chirai Thangal was arrested and hung to death on the charge of killing the two British officers.
