K Muhindro, Secretary, Thangjam Manorama Memorial Foundation Trust, addre- ssing the gathering, recounting the life of Manorama and asserted that she was a simple woman.
However, the 17th Assam Rifles on the pretext of safeguarding the nation arrested her from her home and was raped and inhumanely murdered.
He added that the nonintervention of the then Central Government on the matter indicated an attempt or intention to push Manipur into a state of chaos.
Condemning Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh who was also the then CM of Manipur at the time when Manorama was brutally murdered, K Muhindro questioned the Chief Minister's silence and his failure to intercede for the cause of his people.
He also raised a doubt by further questioning if the Chief Minister would maintain calmness and silence in case the same inhumane treatment was meted to his own child.
He said that an Enquiry Commission was formed to investigate the murder of Manorama but 10 years have passed without any concrete conclusion.
The State Government's ploy to brush aside such heinous act by the AR will only incite similar violation and exploitation of human rights.
Therefore, the enquiry Commission report should be made public at the earliest and the involved Assam Rifles personnels must be penalised accordingly, he added.
Thounaojam Iboyaima asserted that despite years of protests and cries by the people, the State Government and the Central Government continue to remain deaf and dumb Stating the Manipur was never the part of India prior to Independence, Thounaojam Iboyaima added that the people of Manipur still desire to attain an independent State.
Dignitaries and a large numbers of gatherers including students paid a floral tribute and observed a two minutes of silence to remember the late Thangjam Manorama.
