Imphal, November 09 2015:
Major parts of Thangal Bazar would be swept every evening for a period of one month on trial basis.
At the moment, the bazar areas are swept only in the morning.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, the Manipur Workers Union (WUM) president Keithallakpam London said that the new exercise of sweeping Thangal Bazar areas in the evening would be launched from November 10 .
The new initiative was envisaged in view of Imphal being one of the 100 cities selected for development of smart cities by the Ministry of Urban Development.
WUM is also determined to make Imphal city cleaner as Imphal is among the 75 cities selected from across the country for survey under Swachh Bharat Mission.
For the new initiative to be successful, cooperation of IMC, MAHUD, police, media and the general public is crucial, London said.
He then appealed to authorities concerned to check parking of vehicles for prolonged hours on the congested streets of Imphal city and non-functional street lamps.
Piles of garbage and waste materials which were once a common sight at different corners of Imphal city have been slowly disappearing following relentless efforts of WUM and other NGOs, London claimed.
