Jiribam (Imphal East), March 09 2016:
A good deal of loaded vehicles are presently stranded at Jiribam as Weight and Measures Department, Jiribam, has taken up strict measurement of vehicles passing the highway, our correspondent reports.
A State Government order had earlier warned goods carrier not to load more than 24 tons while travelling along National Highway No 37.However, with no strict enforcement of the order, goods carrier freely cross the highway carrying goods over the weight limit.
The Barak bridge which lies along the highway bore the brunt of this.
Acting on the latest break down of the bridge, the Weight and Measures Department at Jiribam assisted by Jiri police has begun strict measurement procedures.
Overweight goods truck from Agartala and Assam are currently stopped at Jiribam for measurement.
The vehicles will be allowed to proceed only after the extra tones are unloaded, our correspondent reports.
In the meantime, a reliable source has informed that the measures are taken up as per instructions from the Chief Secretary, Manipur.
