Imphal, August 04, 2012:
Denouncing the failure of the Government to make urea available to farmers at the price fixed by the Government, farmers today staged a protest demonstration at Senjam Chirang by burning effigies of the top officials of Agriculture Department.
The protesters also contended that the weight of urea bags provided to them weighed less than their standard weight.
In addition to burning effigies, the protest demonstration held under the aegis of the All Manipur Women Democratic Front also figured chanting of slogans.
The All Manipur Women Democratic Front secretary said that urea is being provided to the farmers at a price higher than the price fixed by the Government.
Moreover, urea bags being provided to farmers weigh 5 to 15 Kgs lighter than 50 Kgs which is the standard weight.
This is nothing but day-light robbery.
The Government must look into the matter and pull up the fraudulent officials or an independent agency like CBI should be asked to enquire into the matter, the secretary demanded.
