Imphal, September 01 2017:
Even though areas in and around the three Khwairamband Markets in the heart of the city look clean as a result of day and night cleanliness activities, the temporary market shed of Kongba Keithel which is under Imphal Municipal Corporation is littered with waste products thereby posing health hazards .
According to some locals, it has been a long time that waste materials producing foul smell remain accumulated at the areas adjoining the market shed where vegetables are being sold.
|
They said that foul smell emanating from the waste products causes immense discomfort not only to the women vendors but also to commuters .
They also expressed apprehension over possible outbreak of vector borne diseases due to the accumulation of the filthy materials which have been soaked with rain water .
As per a report given by experts, around 120 tonnes of solid wastes are produced in Imphal city per day.
The figure may rise to 170 tonnes by 2035 .
The figure could be reduced to 40-50 tonnes if the waste materials are cleaned daily .
Now many sections have raised questions whether precautionary measures have been taken up to ensure that the dumping sites where daily waste products collected from the city are being disposed do not pose health hazards.
