CCpur, July 01 2016 :
Torrential rains that hit parts of the district for about an hour around noon today left many areas flooded as roadside drainages and con-crete river banks breached at several locations across the town besides leaving a 5-year-old girl dead and sending many families scurrying for shelter.
Roads across the town, big and small were overrun by flood water as a result of the cloudburst.
Concrete river banks breached or caved in at several locations along the rivulets that flow within the town sending hundreds of families to hurriedly shift their belongings.
At Gangpimual, a village located along the Lanva River, 5 year-old girl Tingpaklian, daughter of Khaizakham of Thiakbung, Thanlon subdivision was swept away by an overflowing drainage that is running next to their house and inundated their campus.
The girl who was staying at her grandparents' house to pursue her studies was a student of preparatory class at Covenant School.

Sources said the girl and her grandmother along with some female members of the family were shifting the flower pots from the ground to their roof-top as a drain about 2 ft wide running just adjacent to their house was overflowing and threatening to flood the pots when she accidentally slipped on the stairs and fell into the surging drainage that was later measured to be around 4 feet deep.
She was located at about 100 meters downstream but despite rushing her to the hospital attempt to resuscitate her failed.
The torrential rain has also deluged most part of the town with water flooding the streets and several residential houses in low lying areas.
People who have encroached into the river banks appeared to be the most affected as the many rivulets that were severely encroached upon of late have breached the concrete embankments at many locations.
It is learnt that the wooden house of Soiminlian of Chingmang Veng, Lhangjol was partially struck by a landslide and left leaning; unfit for occupation.
As no one was present in the house when the calamity struck it evaded casualty.
At Hiangtam Lamka, at least four families were hurriedly shifted as their houses are flooded due to breached in the river bank.
There have also been several reports of destruction and floods particularly along the banks of Lanva River, Lailam stream, Chiengkon stream, and other rivulets that are running across the town but details are yet to be gathered.
Another downpour hit the area again since 6.30 pm and was still to recede even by the time of filing this report.
The intensity of the rain, which is unfeasible to measure due to the absence of any instrument to do so in the area, if identical to the daylight cloudburst is likely to trigger more destruction particularly at the locations where river banks have already been breached or are already precarious.
