Awareness / spot painting competition held

National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB-VI), National Health Mission (NHM) Manipur organised the 37th National Eye Donation Fortnight Awareness cum on-the-Spot Painting 'Competition at Indian Medical Association (IMA) hall, Lamphelpat, here, on Sunday.
Health services director Dr Khoirom Sasheekumar Mangang, additional director Dr Y Gopalkrishna and singer Konthoujam Bobin attended the event as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, NPCBVI-NHM state nodal officer Dr Vikram Khoisnam emphasised on the importance of eye donation and explained that the painting competition has been organised as part of the fortnight programme with the objective to increase awareness among the public.
He further said that the number of people pledging to donate eyes is increasing in the state though no actual donation has been made till date.
However, the state could witness actual donation after a couple of years and as such, health services will begin donor retrieval programme under which eye retrieval-teams will be assigned in different hospitals to extract cornea in case of death of the donors after providing proper counsel ling to their family members, he added.
