United NGOs Mission Manipur, Women Commission (UNM-M WC) strongly condemned the alleged kidnapping, confinement, threat to rape and murder and Keina Katpa (forced marriage) of a PhD scholar of Jawaharlal Nehru University by one Rajkumar Master Meitei (35) s/o RK Sanajaoba of Mayang Imphal Konchak Mayai Leikai on December 12 .
A press release issued by UNM-M WC convener Sobita stated that it is an act of denial of one's consent in determining her most important decision of her life.
Pointing out that consent is one of the most important elements to determine whether any act of elopement is against law or not, the release said if there is an absence of the consent of the girl involved in an elopement, such an act would be considered as/a criminal offence and the accused should be punished.
The women committee strongly condemned victimisation and discrimination of women and girls.
"We urge all authorities concerned to look into the matter and investigate immediately and to take up necessary steps and measure to sentence culprits involved," it demanded.
The committee also urged authorities concerned to strive for preventing such heinous crime and save women and girl of Manipur.
