Imphal, May 17 2022:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) inaugurated a 31-bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the third floor of its Eastern Block located at Langol on Monday.
The event was attended by SHRI CMD Dr Palin Khundongbam, CEO Dr Bonney Khundongbam, medical services director Jugindra Sorokhaibam, Shija Academy of Health Sciences director Dr Maisnam Amuba Singh, senior doctors and the critical care team of SHRI.
A release of SHRI said that with the addition of the 31 ICU beds, the hospital will now have 78 critical care beds and a dedicated team of 12 specialists, 10 resident medical officers, and 160 nurses working shifts to treat and monitor patients round-the-clock.
The newly inaugurated facility will have an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machine, counselling room, ventilators, ABG (Arterial Blood Gas) Analysers, Electrocardiogram (ECG), syringe pumps and monitors attached to each bed, medical gas pipelines, portable ultrasound and x-ray machines, air handling unit for the ICU complex and other cutting-edge hospital technologies, the release said.
The ECMO machine pumps blood from the patient's body to an artificial lung (oxygenator) that adds oxygen to it and removes carbon dioxide.
Thus, it replaces the function of the person's own lungs.
The ECMO machine then sends the blood back to the patient via a pump with the same force as the heart, replacing its function.
The air handling unit (AHU) will ensure good indoor air quality.
The basic function of the AHU is to take in outside air, re-condition it, and supply it as fresh air to a building, explained the release.
It also noted that for SHRI, having a well-equipped ICU with a vibrant critical care team is a dream come true.
During the first and second waves of COVID-19, SHRI offered the greatest number of ICU beds in Manipur.
The hospital set aside 44 ICU beds dedicated for COVID-positive patients.
Mention may be made, SHRI was conferred the National Health Award by Double Helical during the Double Helical Health Conclave on May 2, 2022 at India Habitat Center, New Delhi for its ser vices rendered during the COVID-19 pandemic.
