Imphal, September 06 2022:
A sit-in protest was staged at Tera Lukram Leirak on Wednesday in denunciation of the assault of a woman vendor on Sunday evening by one Haobijam Babuchou, who reportedly is an SI in Telecom department, and demanding arrest of the assailant.
Speaking to the media, one Keithellakpam Margaret recounted that Babuchou assaulted woman vendor Mangolnganbi as the latter was selling fish on the roadside on Sunday evening, adding that, such an act of violence on a woman is strongly condemnable.
She informed that Mangolnganbi is currently under treatment due to injuries suffered in the assault.
While stating that a complaint has been registered against Babuchou, she questioned the rationale for failure by the police to arrest the perpetrator till date.
Urging the chief minister and the authorities concerned to look into the matter and arrest Babuchou at the earliest, she cautioned that if the government fails to do so, the women vendors will undergo several forms of intense agitations.
Meanwhile, United NGOs Mission (UN-M)-Manipur Women Committee has strongly condemned the assault on a 65-year-old woman fish vendor by Haobijam Babumacha Singh (50), son of (late) H Leiyon of Tera Sapam Leirak, presently working as sub-inspector at Wireless Department.
In a release, UNM-M Women Committee convener Sobita Mangsatabam urged all the organisations, clubs, meira paibi activists not to bring settlement through negotiation in the case as rule of law must be observed.
The authorities concerned must look into the matter, investigate it immediately and take up necessary steps so as to award punishment to the culprit, it further demanded.
