Locals oppose expansion of Keibul National Park

Demanding revocation of the gazette notification issued by the state government for expansion of Keibul Lamjao National Park, JAC of the People Areas Effected by Extension of Keibul Lamjao National park organised a public meeting against the expansion at Thangalawai Khongnang Makhong community hall on Friday.
The meeting participated by people from Keibul Lamjao, Keibul Chingmei, Chandapur, Keirenphabi, Kumbi, Ithai Wapokpi, Ithai, Nongmaik-hong and Khordak areas was held with social worker Kh Manihar, N Subol, Sh Ningthemjao, N Khoimu and O Yaima Singh as presidium members.
Speaking in this regard, JAC secretary Kh Surdash contended that as the policy framed by the government department within the comfort of the office room has misled people the order issued by forest and environment will be opposed through of the court of law.
Joint secretary O Jiban informed that the total area of Keibul Lamjao National Park according to 1997 survey is 40 sq km.
The meeting has been conducted against the government policy to expand seven sq.
km more.
He continued that the locals are sustaining their livelihood from the lake by not only collecting fodders for animals and fish but also cultivating vegetables.
Moreover, locals living nearby the National Park have been protecting and preserving the park.
So, he urged the government not to violate the rights of the people living around the park.
Later, participants of the meeting shouted slogans against expansion of Keibul Lamjao National Park and violation of their rights.
