Kangpokpi, January 11 2022:
Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki tribe, submitted a complaint letter to the chief electoral officer (CEO), Manipur and appealed to reschedule the first phase date of polling to some other day other than Sunday.
KIM general secretary Shokholun Mate said the days for casting votes for the upcoming assembly election are on February 27 and March 3.He pointed out that as February 27 falls on Sunday the tribal people settling in the nine assembly constituencies under Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts might face issues as the tribal population in the two districts are predominantly Christian and Sunday is a day of rest and worship for them.
He maintained that scheduling the date of the poll on Sunday has raised serious objections and complaints while it is bound to hurt the religious sentiment of this section of the society and under such circumstances, many voters will be prevented from exercising their adult franchise.
He further said that as it is the policy of the election commission to ensure the participation of all eligible citizens to exercise their adult franchise, it would be in everyone's best interest to reschedule the polling day to another day other than Sunday.
