Imphal, September 25 2022:
In connection with the month-long observance of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot, All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) in collaboration with the Fishery Department launched an initiative to release around 75000 fingerlings in over 100 local ponds on Sunday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch function, AMUCO president Nando Luwang informed that the fingerlings would be released in ponds of historical importance including those at Kekrupat, Ningthem Pukhri Mapal and Ima Khunthokhanbi.
Prior to this initiative, several free medical camps, veterinary awareness programme, cleanliness programmes and plastic-free drives have been carried out as part of the month-long observance, all of which will continue to be held till September 30.He then stressed the need for the present generation to have a healthy body in addition to imbibing sense of conservation of the environment for the sake of future generations.
AMUCO has been working for a self-sustainable Manipur and providing fertilisers and other materials in need to the farmers.
Manipur has very high fish consumption rate and as such, the fingerlings would be released so as to help in meeting the demand of the state.
Fishery Department director Heisnam Balkrishna said that the initiative has been taken up after AMUCO approached the department for the same.
As Manipur is barely able to produce 30 MT of its total fish demand of 50 MT per year, the state has to spend around Rs 300-400 crore per year in importing the remaining 20 MT from outside the state.
If the natural resources available in the state are properly utilised and the potentials explored/tapped, Manipur could become self-sustainable, he said.
