Imphal, August 03 2022:
Water Resources minister Awangbow Newmai informed the state assembly on Wednesday that as part of a project taken up under the funding of National Development Bank to develop Lamphelpat into a water body, a tender has been floated for commencing the dredging works.
The minister was replying to a cut policy motion raised by opposition MLA Th Lokeshwar during the discussion and voting on demand for grants of Water Resources Department during the 9th sitting of the Manipur Legislative Assembly .
Minister Awangbow also informed that around 17.3 km of the left canal of Dolaithabi Barrage has been completed, while for the right canal, around 14km has been completed.
The delay in completion of the project is due to the land acquisition disputes.
However, the former Water Resources minister signed an MoU on September 15 last year, based on which the process for distribution of compensation and land acquisitions has been initiated.
He then invited the opposition MLA for a joint inspection of the area after the culmination of the ongoing Assembly session.
The minister further said that the state government is busy developing the water bodies in the state including Waithou Pat, Upper Irong Nala, Lower Irong Nala and Lamphelpat.
The project for Lamphelpat is being taken up under the strict supervision of the CM to prevent the problem of frequent flooding in parts of Imphal City and develop the same into an ecotourism spot, he conveyed.
