Man held for fleecing Covid scheme aid seekers

Thoubal police on Wednesday arrested a man for collecting money from applicants of the Chief Minister Covid-19 Affected Livelihood Support Scheme.
The arrested man has been identified as Moirangthem Jelen (44) son of M Thambalngou of Khangabok Part 1 Awang Leikai.
According to police, a letter sent by Social Welfare Department's director Ngangom Uttam to Thoubal SP conveyed that a notification for submitting the forms to avail relief aid of Rs 5000 under Chief Minister's Covid-19 Affected Livelihood Scheme was issued on July 28 .
According to the scheme, the selected families will be provided Rs 5000 in two instalments.
The application form and the rules and regulation for the schemes are made available on www.socialwelfare.mm.gov.in or at DC offices at free of cost, it added.
Meanwhile, the department found a notification issued by Manipur Silang Loumi Lup, Irawat Bhavan complex which is affiliated under Bharatiya Khet Mazadoor Union on August 3, and Moirangthem Jelen collected Rs 300-400 each from applicants with assurance that they will get benefits of the schemes.
Based on the letter send by the director, Thoubal PS registered a case and launched investigation during which Jelen was picked out from his residence on Wednesday, it added.
