Imphal, September 30 2022:
Demanding the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list as constitutional safeguard for the community, a sit-in protest was staged at the ground of Sun Club, Mongsangei on Friday.
Speaking on the sidelines, Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) publicity secretary W Anand pointed out that the state cabinet banned 500 ml plastic bottles on July 2022 after deliberating for a year.
However, it refuses to discuss the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST list which has been raised for over 10 years.
A similar sit-in was staged at Wangoo on Friday, wherein STDCM working president Lt Col L Lokendrajit urged the government to be enthusiastic about ST demand just as it is about legalising liquor.
During the sit-in, the protestors shouted slogans and also held placards and banners inscribed with slogans like 'Include Meetei/Meitei in ST List', 'Save indigenous Meetei-Meitei community', and 'Forward recommendation for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in ST List' .
