Imphal, September 13 2021:
Valentina Elangbam, who was named as brand ambassador of Chief Minister's Green Manipur Mission after a video of her crying on seeing a tree she planted cut down went viral, met chief minister N Biren on Monday and submitted a memorandum with the request to launch a special mission to save wildlife.
In her memorandum, Valentina also appealed to the CM to take up suitable actions against encroachers in protected areas & wetlands, poachers and those who are committing environmental crimes.
She also proposed for making it mandatory to plant one sapling each by every student in an academic session by incorporating the same as an academic curriculum activity.
While recalling how pre-wed-ding tree plantation became a trend after one bride-to-be Chabungbam Omita planted a sapling in her homestead land on December 5, 2018, the memorandum drew attention of the CM to encourage such trends either through social media or through a common platform.
The memorandum mentioned about plantation of 250 tree saplings alongside the road connecting Lamjao and Hiyanglam by local people led by Valentina in 2020 and added that those tree saplings are maturing satisfactorily today.
However, it needs protection from cattle, the memorandum said while appealing to the CM to explore the possibility of sanctioning some fund for fencing the trees.
The CM assured to take up necessary measures to translate her request into action.
