Assembly archives celebrates foundation day

The 4th Foundation Day of Manipur Legislative Assembly Museum and Archives was celebrated at its Old Assembly Road complex, here, on Tuesday.
The function organised by Manipur Legislative Assembly secretariat was attended by incumbent speaker Y Khemchand as chief guest and Assembly secretary Karam Meghajit as president while Khundrakpam MLA and former speaker Th Lokeswar and Lamlai MLA Kh Ibomcha were present as guests of honour.
In his speech at the event., Khemchand, who is also the RD & PR minister, said that October 18 is a significant day for Manipur as it was on this day in 1948 that the first session of Manipur assembly was convened after holding a general election the same year flowing introduction of Manipur Constitution Act, 1947 by the then king Bodhchandra.
It was on October 18, 1948 that Manipur became a democratic country in South East Asia and considering importance of this day the Museum and Archives of Manipur Legislative Assembly was set up, he recalled and stressed the need for proper maintenance of the museum and archives.
Khemchand also recalled that before India framed its own Constitution, Manipur had its own Constitution and conducted election under universal adult franchise.
People of Manipur should be proud of being the first in South East Asia to convene first assembly session, he said While stressing the need for celebrating the day in a grand manner in the coming years.
Meanwhile, Karam Meghajit said that platinum jubilee celebration of the first session of Manipur Legislative Assembly will be celebrated next year (2023) in a big way.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha and speakers of legislative assemblies of many states of India will be invited to take part in the celebration.
As part of the event, former director (art and culture) Dr K Sobita spoke on 'Significance of museum in our society' as a resource person.
