Shumang Leela Festival : 'Nonglakki Thawanmichak' highlights aftermath of false rumours

The eleventh day of the Nupa (male) Shumang Leela category in the ongoing 51st All Manipur Shumang Leela Festival 2022-23, which is being organised by Manipur State Kala Akademi at Th Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound was marked by the presentation of the play, 'Nonglakki Thawanmichak' by Poklen Pokpa Artistes' Association on Tuesday afternoon.
In 'Nonglakki Thawanmichak', Thambal is a widow but has done good job in rais ing her son, Nongdamba as a righteous, compassionate and well-mannered human being.
Nongdamba is in a relationship with Yaiphaba's sister Laija.
Meanwhile, Chaoba's only daughter Numitlei is married to Yomayai and has a kid.
Yomayai, however, lacks character and is unfaithful.
He falls in love with Laija and plans to separate from Numitlei.
He calls out Numitlei one night and attempts to kill her.
Fortunately, Numitlei who was left for dead by her own husband is found by Nongdamba and taken to the hospital.
Amidst this, the date is set for Nongdamba and Laija's wedding.
However, Nongdamba, who had helped a fellow human being, faces the society 's wrath when rumours are spread on social media platforms.
Unable to bear the false accusations and taunts, a humiliated Nongdamba breaks down mentally.
Laija and her brother soon hear of the false rumours as well.
In such a situation, Thambal takes on the responsibility to save her son.
After verifying all the rumours and the facts, Laija resolves to save Nongdamba who has gone insane.
Both Nongdamba and Laija put Kundo (garland of jasmine) on each other's neck in front of Thambal and Yaiphaba, as a form of promise to live together as husband and wife.
Written by Pratap Chongtham, the play has been directed by Gokul Mangang, who also plays the character Chaoba' .
Romesh Khurai (Nongdamba), Ashok Salungpham (Yaiphaba), Jackie Heirok (Leitum) and Praveen (Yoimayai) play the other male characters; while the female roles were portrayed by Denu (Thambal), Sarju Thoubal (Laija), and Sanju Utlou (Numitlei) .
