Imphal, August 22 2022:
A one-day discussion programme on 'effects of drugs in the society and the role of public in preventing this evil' was organised by Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) in association with Thoubal District United Women's Development Organisation (THOUBAL IMA), CADA Hiyanglam Unit and CADA Kakching district at Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai community hall, Kakching district on Sunday afternoon.
The programme was attended by Thoubal District United Women's Development Organisation (THOUBAL IMA) president Sapam (O) Bimola; CADA secretary (drive) Mayengbam Budhi; CADA Hiyanglam Unit VP Wahengbam Ibemnungsi; and CADA Kakching District Committee president Sorokhaibam Nena as presidium members while CADA VP spoke as one of the resource persons.
During the programme, the speakers highlighted the effects of drugs not only on the individuals but also on their families and the society.
Substance abuse leads to other evils such as domestic violence and other crimes.
Although preventive measures and banning illegal substances is important, we must refrain from humiliating the users themselves, and instead treat them with love and care and guide them back to the mainstream society.
Substance addiction is a disease and needs medical treatment through consultation with doctors or getting treatment at rehabilitation centres.
People also need to work together to save the future generations and the state from drug menace.
Awareness programmes play an important role, but the effect is low owing to the high number of drugs/alcohol or other substance abusers.
Thus, community relationships is key in this regard and the government also with the people must work together to prevent any opportunity for substance abuse such as during election periods or other occasions.
Local clubs, organisations and Meira Paibi associations also need to cooperate with one another so as to put an end to this evil once and for all, a press release CADA Information & Publicity secretary Khundongbam Anand conveyed.
