Statue of Lamyanba Thoukachanpa unveiled

Celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Lamyanba Maichou Thoukachanpa, a statue of the late pioneering leader of Meetei Mayek revival movement was unveiled at Sagolband Kurao Makhong United Club compound, here, on Sunday.
The celebration function was jointly organised by Maichou Thoukachanpa Ningshing Thoushil Lup and the Club.
Along with unveiling the statue of Thoukachanpa by Patsoi MLA Sapam Kunjakishwor, a souvenir was also released in addition to presenting gifts to elderly associates of the late leader.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Kunjakishwor reminded that Manipur was an independent kingdom with own script and it was during the reign of King Pamhei ba in the 18th century that Meetei Mayek was forcefully replaced by Bangali script.
But now, the system in the society has changed and the people of Manipur are elated over the fact that they have a script of their own and the credit for this has to be given to Lamyanba Maichou Thoukachanpa who is the modern revivalist of Meetei Mayek.
Informing that Maichou Thoukachanpa had contributed his mite and sacrificed his life for the sake preserving and promoting Meetei Mayek, the MLA stated that we cannot take lightly the fact the indigenous script is now studied till the master's level.
Presided over by Ihousil Lup president, Moirangthem Naokhamba Meetei, the function was also attended by United Club advisor Sukham Ratan as guest of honour.
Six students who topped in Meetei Mayek subject in the class X and XII examinations were also honoured on the occasion.
