Magar community celebrates Maghe Sankranti

For the first time, a cultural programme was organised at the community level by All Manipur Magar Association (AMMA) on the auspicious occasion of Maghe Sankranti, a major festival of Magar community, under the theme 'Culture Preservation' at AR Colony, Kanglatongbi on January 15 .
In a release, AMMA stated that the programme was attended by Kanglatongbi Gram Panchayat up-pradhan Deepa Thapa as chief guest, vice president as Padam Thapa as functional president and AMGWU vice president MB Thapa as guest of honour, while Lamka College, Churchandpur associate professor Dhiraj Thapa, retired SBI chief manager and former Manipur Women's Co-Operative Bank CEO Indra Kumar Rana along with Central Silk Board scientist D Dr Biren Rana were present as special guests.
As a part of the celebration, outstanding individuals in the field of sports, culture and other activities were felicitated in addition to release of calendar of AMMA and distribution of membership certificates.
Speaking on the occasion, AMMA general secretary Rajen Thapa informed that the total population of Magar community in the state has been recorded approximately as 2500- 3000 with 360 houses as per the data collected in the year of 2021 .
He continued that the aim of the Association is to follow and preserve the culture and traditions of the community which are vanishing day by day.
In the history of Gorkha in Manipur, a huge contribution has been made by Magar ancestors, such as ex-MLA of Kangpokpi assembly constituency (1974-84) Late Kishor Thapa Magar; Late Tulachand Ale Magar, who wrote the first book about the history of Gorkha in Manipur 'Manipur ko Ladai ko Sawai' in 1891-93; social worker Late Shiva Kumar Ale Magar; 1st GB Irang Part -2 Late Sher Bahadur Ale; and Late Padam Singh Thapa Magar, oldest grazier and founder of Irang part-2 village, Rajen added.
