MU celebrates central university status

The 16th anniversary of Manipur University becoming central university was celebrated bv Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) at MU Court Hall on Wednesday.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, MU vice chancellor Prof Naorem Lokendra Singh expressed confidence that Manipur University is heading towards the right direction and in coming decades will become a very competitive varsity in South East Asia.
He recalled that MU become a full-fledged state university from JNU PG Centre on June, 1980 and on October 13, 2005, the Parliament passed the MU Act making it a central university.
He also noted that a central university in India is considered a prestigious institute with its students and faculty members accorded prime importance by the Union government.
Prof N Lokendra observed that the varsity has been aiding the government in development of human resources and regional growth.
Its teachers, students, research scholars and non-teaching staff are actively participating in the materialisation of the new education policy and bringing development at the regional, national and global level.
He admitted that the Covid-19 pandemic has disturbed the teaching-learning process of the varsity.
Despite this, faculty members are doing their best and keeping the teaching-learning process at satisfactory level.
Very soon results of 6th semester exams will be announced while entrance exams are being conducted for new academic session with many of the departments declaring their results.
The new academic session will also begin soon, he further assured.
Prof N Lokendra mentioned that MU is becoming a leading varsity amongst newly established central universities in the country.
The university has started admitting many international students with the Indian Council of Cultural Relation also expressing keen interest in sending many such students to the varsity.
Hostels for both boys and girls have been constructed with funding from the DoNER Ministry for accommodating international students and will soon be see significant improvement in infrastructure, he informed.
A discussion on the theme 'Manipur University: Problems and Prospects' was also conducted during the programme with Prof Sh Dorendrajit Singh, Prof M Ranjit Singh and Prof Debananda Singh Ningthoujam as the panellists.
The celebration function was also attended by MUSU president Maibam Maikel Singh as president and MU dean of students' welfare Dr L Bishwanath Sharma as guest of honour.
