Imphal, May 11 2021:
Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has urged the Chief Minister to review the government's May 6 order and allow bank transactions for state NGOs.
The order issued on May 6 by the chief secretary and chairman of the State Executive Committee allowed only government transactions in all bank branches and transactions related to COVID-19 management and government projects/ urgent matter.
In its letter, YFPHR said that just as the government is responsible for protection its citizens, it is also the responsibility of the NGOs operating in Manipur to contribute to the work of the government.
However, the order allowing only government transactions in the banks is hampering various activities of the NGOs.
YFPHR then explained that its request for allowing bank transactions by NGOs is to enable them to continue relief work for daily wage earners such as women street vendors, labourers, rickshaw pullers, fishers, commercial sex workers, drivers of private vehicle passengers, differently-abled persons and pregnant women among others.
The Forum also mentioned "advanced salary for the staff members for their family management during the curfew; economic support for the women survivors of violence against women during Covid crisis; and to provide financial support for the most vulnerable section of the society who are in need of urgent medical attention and medication" to substantiate its request for review of the order.
YFPHR urged the Chief Minister to direct the authority concerned to review the order issued by the chief secretary and insert a clause allowing the bank transactions for the NGOs of the state so as to assist the activities of the government in the best interest of the people.
