Shija performs another successful kidney transplant

For the second time, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) successfully performed kidney transplant on an international patient on February 22 at its institute located at Langol.
The transplant team included SHRI consultant nephrologist Dr Guliver Potsangbam, consultant urologist and renal trans plant surgeon Dr Somorendro Paonam and consultant urologist Dr Mahele Maharabam along with highly skilled anaesthetists, nurses and other support staff, said SHRI business development deputy manager Takhellambam Premkumar in a release.
The release said that the patient is a 55-year-old woman from Mandalay, Myanmar who had chronic kidney disease and have been on maintenance haemodialysis for two months.
The lack of good transplant centres in Myanmar prompted them to seek transplant abroad and through their family's circle, they came into contact with one Shija facilitator in Myanmar.
It is worth mentioning that the cost of kidney transplant is four times higher in Bangkok and ten times higher in Singapore if compared with Shija.
The patient and family reached Imphal via Kolkata and on February 22, the patient underwent live-related kidney transplantation at Shija.
Her eldest son was her kidney donor.
The donor's kidney was removed through keyhole surgery.

donor recovered well after the surgery.
The donor was discharged from the hospital on February 25 and the patient on March 1, in stable conditions.
They are still in Imphal for post-transplant care, said the release.
It also informed that the Myanmarese woman was the 80th kidney transplant patient at Shija.
Among these patients, two were from Myanmar, six were from Nagaland and 72 from Manipur.
It may also be mentioned that SHRI is the first hospital in the entire northeast to have performed a successful ABO incompatible kidney transplant.
