14 in fray for ADC polls

In connection with the election to the 10 constituencies under Ukhrul and Senapati District Councils scheduled on October 24, in all 14 candidates have submitted their nomination papers to the respective returning officers (ROs) till the last hour of filing the nominations today, Secretary of State Election Commission Th Chitra has announced.
However, as the Secretary of State Election Commission has declined to disclose the names of the 14 candidates who submitted their nominations, some confusion has been created in the minds of the voters who are to exercise their franchise in the election.
The election to the 10 Constituencies could not be held last time due to various reasons.
Talking to mediapersons today, Th Chitra informed that till 3 pm today, which is the last hour of filing the nomination papers, in all 14 candidates including four Independents filed their nominations to contest in the election from 10 constituencies of the two ADCs.
Of the 10 constituencies; only one nomination paper each from Congress candidates have been filed in 7 constituencies papers.
So, all the seven Congress candidates could be declared as elected without any contest.
But in the remaining 3 constituencies, both Congress and Independent candidates have filed their nominations.
Under Ukhrul ADC where polling is to be held for two constituencies, one Congress candidate and one Independent candidate have field their nomination papers to contest for the seat of Chingai constituency while only one Congress candidate has filed nomination paper for the Shangsak constituency.
Under Senapati ADC, where election is to be conducted in 8 constituencies, only Congress candidate each have filed nominations in Tungam Khullen, Punanamei, Songsong, Maram, Lairouching and Tadubi constituencies.
In Phaibung Khullen constituency, one Congress candidate and one Independent candidate have filed the nominations whereas in Chawangnamei constituency, one Congress candidate and two Independent candidates have filed their nomination papers.
The Secretary of State Election Commission Th Chitra, however, declined to disclose the names and other particulars of the candidates who have submitted their nomination papers to contest in the election.
This has caused confusion in the minds of the people, specially the voters who are to exercise their franchises.
The scrutiny of the nomination papers is to be conducted on October 1 and October 3 has been fixed as the last date of withdrawing the nomination papers.
The election would be conducted on October 24 from 8 am to 4 pm and the results are to be declared on October 31 .
