Imphal, October 21 2020:
Nomination papers of 15 candidates for the by-elections on November 7 have cleared scrutiny while one was rejected today.
As the scrutiny cleared the way for the 15 candidates, the elections are expected to see intense fighting between the BJP and its main rival Congress.
Both the BJP and the Congress had recently ramped up their election campaigns.
With the scrutiny panel clearing their nomination papers in Wangjing-Tentha Assembly Constituency, BJP's candidate P Brojen will face INC candidate M Hemanta and Independent candidate Sarangthem Manaobi.
In Lilong Assembly Constituency, the fight will be between INC candidate Md Azziul Haque Khan and four Independent candidates, former Minister Abdul Nasir, Y Santas Khan, Wangmayum Reshma and Abdul Jabar Khan.
However, the scrutiny for Lilong Assembly Constituency was not smooth as Independent candidate Wangmayum Reshma raised objection to the former Minister Nasir's nomination paper regarding his date of birth.
She raised objection that as per the paper filed, Nasir was only 11-years-old in Class X .
The Returning Officer, however rejected the objection stating that objection can't be the ground for rejection of Nasir's candidacy.
She can file an election petition challenging the affidavit Nasir filed, said the RO rejecting her objection.
After coming out of the scrutiny room, Wangmayum Reshma said she will be filing a petition in Court challenging Nasir's candidacy.
On the other hand, the respective RO for Wangoi Assembly Constituency cleared nomination papers for BJP candidate, former Agriculture Minister Oinam Lukhoi, Congress candidate Salam Joy and NPP candidate Kh Loken and rejected papers of Independent candidate M Totomsana (Nongshaba) .
The fight for Singnat Assembly Constituency seat will be between BJP candidate Ginsuanhau and Independent candidate Chinlunthang.
It may be noted that Independent candidate Chinlunthang had contested the previous elections on a BJP ticket.
Saitu Assembly Constituency will see a fight between BJP candidate Ngamthang Haokip and Congress candidate Lamtinthang Haokip.
October 23 is the last day for withdrawing the nomination papers.
